Overview

Zaxxon for the Intellivision ports Sega's 1981 arcade shooter to Mattel's console, trading the original isometric perspective for a third-person, behind-the-ship viewpoint. Players pilot a fighter through a series of stages, bombing enemy installations while dodging walls and force fields. The conversion was developed by Sega and published by Coleco in North America, with regional variants appearing under the CBS Electronics label.

Why it matters

The Intellivision version of Zaxxon is one of several home ports of the arcade original, each with distinct visual and mechanical differences. Its use of a behind-the-ship perspective sets it apart from the isometric ColecoVision port, making it a notable variation in the game's home release history.

03

The physical edition

A typical complete copy includes the cartridge, an instruction manual, and a box with platform-specific artwork and part numbers. Regional editions vary in label, language, and packaging details, so a given box does not represent every variant released for this title.

Playing it today

The Intellivision Zaxxon runs on original hardware with a standard controller and plays as a single-player shooter. It is also available through emulators, where the behind-the-ship perspective and stage layout can be experienced without original equipment.
