Overview

The Legend of Zelda casts players as Link on a quest to recover the pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom and rescue Princess Zelda. Hyrule's overworld can be explored freely, while dungeon progress depends on keys, combat, observation, and tools found along the way. Several dungeons can be approached out of numerical order, but item requirements prevent the adventure from being completely sequence-free.

02

Why it matters

This title shaped how action-adventure games on home consoles could work. Its open layout and item-based progression became a template the series would refine for decades. For collectors, it matters as one of the most recognizable early NES adventure games, with a simple box design and a story that many players still remember from their first encounters with the cartridge.

03

The physical edition

A typical complete copy includes the NES cartridge, outer box, and instruction booklet, with maps or other paper inserts depending on the specific release. Cartridge color, packaging, labels, and documentation differ across regions, reissues, and later budget editions.

04

Playing it today

The game runs on original NES hardware or many emulators. Controls are straightforward: one button for A, one for B, and a direction pad. No special settings or compatibility tricks are needed for most systems. The experience is slow by modern standards, but that pace is part of its appeal.
