01
Overview
Tetris Attack uses the Tetris name but plays like a block-matching puzzle: a two-panel cursor swaps adjacent tiles, and lines of three or more matching symbols clear while the stack slowly climbs. Modes include Endless, Time Trial, Stage Clear, Puzzle, and a two-player Versus mode that punishes mistakes with garbage blocks. The Game Boy release is a portable version of the earlier Super NES Panel de Pon, with simpler palettes and a tighter playfield.
02
Why it matters
The game is a useful example of how 1990s Nintendo puzzle design borrowed the Tetris brand while actually selling a different matching mechanic. It also shows how the same title could appear under different names and character sets across regions.
03
The physical edition
A typical boxed copy includes the Game Boy cartridge, instruction manual, and the standard Game Boy cardboard box; regional versions can differ in box shape, cover art, and language. Some copies may also include an outer shrink sleeve, stickers, or a warranty card depending on the region and how the seller packaged the set.
04
Playing it today
The cartridge runs on any original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, or Game Boy Color, and the simple controls make it easy to pick up. For Versus mode you need a second Game Boy, a second cartridge, and a Game Link cable; single-player modes work with just one system.
