Overview

You play Sonic, a blue hedgehog who spins into a ball to defeat enemies and clear obstacles at high speed. The game features three zones: Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and Labyrinth, each built around momentum-based routes. The Genesis cartridge has no battery-backed save feature, so a run restarts from the beginning after a loss.

02

Why it matters

It helped define the speed-platformer genre and became the signature title for the Sega Genesis in many markets. As a launch-window flagship, it also shaped how a console's first-party lineup was presented in physical retail.

03

The physical edition

A typical complete copy includes the cartridge, instruction manual, and retail case or box. Case construction, cover art, labels, ratings, and paper inserts differ across North American, European, and Japanese releases and can vary between printings, so packaging is a separate object from the game itself.

04

Playing it today

The original cartridge runs on compatible Genesis or Mega Drive hardware and does not include battery-backed saving. Numerous official collections and modern releases offer other ways to play, though presentation and features vary by version.
