01

Overview

Shift drops the franchise's familiar police chases and open-road cruising in favor of circuit racing across a roster of real-world tracks. Players progress through a career by completing events, earning money, and unlocking cars in higher performance tiers, with the option to fine-tune setups such as tire pressure, weight distribution, and gear ratios. A trial lap at the start calibrates the handling model and difficulty to the player's demonstrated skill.

02

Why it matters

It marked a deliberate pivot in a long-running series, bringing a more simulation-leaning driving feel to a mainstream audience. Developed by Slightly Mad Studios, it also stands as the first in a line of driving-focused games from the team behind GT Legends.

03

The physical edition

A complete physical copy typically includes the Blu-ray disc, the keep case, and a printed instruction manual. Packaging details such as region markings, cover art, and included inserts vary by edition, so the physical presentation differs from one regional release to another.

04

Playing it today

The game installs required files to the PS3 hard drive before first play, so a functional console with free space is needed. It runs a standard single-player career and quick race modes, and the handling can feel demanding at first, though difficulty and assistance settings are adjustable.
