Overview

Metal Gear Solid follows Solid Snake as he infiltrates Shadow Moses Island to stop a hostile faction from using Metal Gear REX. The game blends sneaking, surveillance, limited combat, codec conversations, and elaborate boss encounters. Its two-disc structure and cinematic presentation made it a major showcase for narrative design on the original PlayStation.

02

Why it matters

As one of the first widely played 3D stealth games, it helped bring the stealth genre to mainstream consoles. Its mix of infiltration, story, and PlayStation-specific touches established a template that many later action-adventure games followed.

03

The physical edition

A typical complete copy includes both game discs, the original case and cover artwork, and a printed manual. Packaging, ratings, case style, reprint branding, and additional paper inserts vary by region and edition, so compare a copy with documentation for the same release.

04

Playing it today

The game runs on an original PlayStation with a standard controller and uses a memory card for saves. Compatible later PlayStation hardware and official modern re-releases provide additional ways to play; original discs and consoles are region-coded.
