01

Overview

Tiles roll down an angled conveyor belt while the player moves a paddle to catch and place them into a five-by-five bin. The objective is to form lines of three or more same-colored tiles horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to clear space before the bin fills. The game presents a series of waves, each with its own objective, and the pace quickens as play progresses.

02

Why it matters

Klax helped define a recognizable subgenre of arcade puzzle games that emphasized quick decision-making and pattern recognition. Its NES edition also sits in an unusual spot in console history, published through Tengen, an Atari Games subsidiary that shipped the cartridge without a standard Nintendo license.

03

The physical edition

A typical North American copy includes a black Tengen cartridge, an instruction booklet, and a printed box. Because Tengen operated outside Nintendo's normal licensing process, regional and packaging details can differ, so each copy should be verified on its own merits.

04

Playing it today

The game runs on standard NES hardware, so a working console and at least one controller are all that is needed. The two-player mode and increasing tile speed make it approachable for a first session yet challenging over longer plays.
