Overview
Dissidia Final Fantasy is a 3D fighting game in which heroes and antagonists from multiple Final Fantasy titles face off in one-on-one battles. It launched in Japan in December 2008 and later reached North America and Europe in 2009, with a Japan-only Universal Tuning update following in late 2009. The roster spans the original series and several spin-offs, giving players a broad cast to collect and learn.
02
Why it matters
It was a landmark crossover for a handheld system, pairing the Final Fantasy brand with a genre the series had not previously explored. Its PSP release also marked an early example of a major franchise flagship appearing on UMD media.
03
The physical edition
A typical complete copy includes the UMD disc in a standard PSP case with a printed box, along with any enclosed manual or inserts for the specific region and edition. Packaging details such as box art, inserts, and bonus materials differ between Japanese, North American, European, and Universal Tuning releases.
04
Playing it today
The game runs on original PSP hardware or PSP emulators such as PPSSPP on a PC or compatible device. For online play, ad hoc connections work best with a second PSP and a shared wireless network, while emulated play is generally more practical for solo sessions.
