Overview

Bomberman 64 moves the series into three dimensions, replacing grid-based arenas with free-roaming battle stages and a single-player adventure built from platforming and puzzle elements. Bomberman can kick, pick up, and throw bombs at will, and can pump a held bomb for a larger blast before letting it go. The game supports up to four local players, with a Controller Pak used to store custom character designs for battle mode.

02

Why it matters

It is the series' first 3D experiment, and its open-arena combat style stood apart from the grid-based formula that defined most other Bomberman titles. The adventure mode's world layout and collectible structure gave the series a different single-player shape for the era.

03

The physical edition

A typical complete copy includes the cartridge, outer box, inner sleeve, and instruction manual, with box art and labeling that vary by region. Some regions carried a Nintendo-published label while others retained Hudson branding, so the box and cartridge markings are edition-specific rather than identical everywhere.

04

Playing it today

The cartridge plays on a standard Nintendo 64 console without an Expansion Pak, and adventure progress saves to the cartridge's built-in backup memory. A Controller Pak is only needed to save custom battle characters, so the core game is fully playable without one.
