Overview

BattleTanx: Global Assault is a sequel to the 1999 N64 title BattleTanx, developed and published by The 3DO Company. Players choose from multiple gangs, each with its own roster of tanks and special abilities, and fight through single-player missions or head-to-head multiplayer. The campaign spans recognizable real-world landmarks, and the game added co-op play and destructible environments to the original's top-down tank combat formula.

02

Why it matters

Global Assault expanded a niche but well-regarded N64 vehicle combat series with new tanks, co-op mode, and a larger campaign, making it one of the platform's few dedicated multiplayer tank games. It is also the final entry in the series, as 3DO filed for bankruptcy before a planned third installment could ship.

03

The physical edition

A typical North American N64 copy ships in a cardboard box with the cartridge, instruction manual, and a Nintendo 64 Memory Pak required to save single-player progress. European and other regional editions may include different manual text, cover art, or additional inserts, so check the specific copy's packaging before purchase.

04

Playing it today

The game runs on any standard N64 console or N64 emulator and supports up to four players in multiplayer. Single-player progress requires a Memory Pak, which is easy to find and inexpensive today.
